He takes refuge in Joo-hee's room and finds his brother's corpse in her wardrobe, realizing Joo-hee is the killer before she knocks him unconscious, steals his wallet, and flees with Pyeong-Hwa. The killer fatally stabs Eun-hye's boyfriend and attacks Sung-Soo. In Eun-Hye's room, Sung-Soo finds the girl's corpse in her wardrobe. He discovers that the man is Eun-Hye's boyfriend, who also thought Sung-chul is the one who killed his girlfriend. Sung-Soo goes to confront his brother, only to be attacked by the man stalking him. Min-Ji tells him they must return to America. In their penthouse, he finds similar symbols, deducing that the stranger knows about his home. Sung-soo later figures out that the symbols on the doors are "hide and seek codes" that indicate the gender and numbers of people. They theorize that the murderer was Sung-Chul, who wanted to get revenge on Sung-Soo for ruining his life. Meanwhile, Min-Ji and the children are attacked by the same stranger who killed Eun-Hye. Sung-Soo decides to stay in his brother's room.ĭuring his stay, he discovers a secret passage that connects his room and Eun-Hye's room, finding the latter's underwear in Sung-Chul's drawers. When Sung-Soo tells her he went to visit his brother, she suddenly become hostile and kicks them out of her room. There, he finds strange symbols carved into every door and meets his brother's neighbor Joo-hee and her young daughter Pyeong-Hwa. One day, Sung-soo receives a phone call that his estranged brother is missing and goes to his brother's apartment for the first time in decades to look for him. Since that day, he has constant nightmares about his brother and regularly takes drugs to overcome his guilt.

Hide and Seek comes to digital and on demand on Friday, November 19th.A woman named Eun-Hye is stalked by a stranger who murders her in her apartment. Hide and Seek had a long way to go in terms of being an actual good thriller, but the fumbling of the killer’s unmasking makes the conclusion into a feature difficult to recommend. Once the script puts children in peril, it soars to thrilling highs that are unparalleled in the first two acts. The recurring nightmares, however, quickly grow stale. Even if it fails to go the extra mile, the lead character played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers is compelling at least. Joel David Moore may be just as good of a director as he is an actor I cannot wait to see what he does next. The mystery around the identity of the killer actually had me invested, before serving up an underwhelming unmasking that feels like an afterthought.Ĭolorful and stylish cinematography do a decent job in making the viewer forget how predictable this all feels. The closest look of the killer would be that of Brenda’s puffy Parka costume in 1998’s Urban Legend. Regardless of this obvious misstep, the killer’s outfit is that of an eerie motorcycle-helmet freak and is easily my favorite visual. Instead, a watered-down Kiss the Girls was on the menu. The derelict locale is deliciously perfect, with the Queens setting adding the extra layer of edge. Had the script gone full-tilt terror and thrills, we could be looking at a mildly successful throwback with the crumbling apartment building being the perfect setting. One thing is for sure, one will never hear that age-old “London Bridge is Falling Down” nursery rhyme quite the same…įrustratingly, Hide and Seek flirts with horror but fails to fully embrace it. Noah’s sanity hangs in the balance, and murder swirls through the air. Driven down a path of mysteries and curiosities, Noah is ensnared in a dark underworld. Their father having recently passed, Noah is seeking his brother to share the family fortune. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Noah, a wealthy businessman hunting for his missing junkie brother.

Production quality is high for a movie that slides neatly into methodically-choreographed cliches. Generic thrillers are a dime a dozen, and Hide and Seek is yet another addition to this lengthy genre tag.
